The College of Music serves as the central hub for numerous campus musical groups, including orchestras, bands, choirs, jazz ensembles, early music groups, nine world music ensembles, and various chamber groups, alongside the Florida State Opera and Music Theater Program. Annually, the college presents approximately 350 performances and events while frequently organizing national conferences, workshops, and festivals like the biennial Festival of New Music. Our distinguished history gives us valuable insight into artistic excellence and motivates us to pursue ongoing improvement. However, our true measure of success lies in how we serve you—the aspiring musicians who will fill our practice rooms, lecture halls, and studios. We welcome students at every level who are committed to reaching their full potential in professional training. We look for individuals who will enrich Florida State's vibrant musical community and who will embrace our college's welcoming atmosphere. Since 1930, Florida State University has maintained accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music.
The Organ program assists students preparing for careers in sacred music and concert performance. Our campus and neighboring churches house an impressive collection of teaching and practice organs. Instruction primarily occurs on Opperman Music Hall's Holtkamp (3-manual) organ, though we also utilize Trinity United Methodist's Casavant (3-manual), First Presbyterian's Taylor and Boody (2-manual), and St. John's Episcopal's Fisk (2-manual) organs. Additionally, our campus features three practice organs along with continuo instruments and a regal.
