The Modern Languages and Linguistics Department teaches Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, with a strong focus on intercultural communication. Beyond language studies, we provide linguistics courses and English-taught classes covering various cultural topics, including films from Arabic, Brazilian, Chinese, French, German, Hispanic, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Turkish traditions. Students can explore courses on Hispanic, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Slavic, and Turkish cultures, Russian/Slavic folklore, and translated literature from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Latin American sources. Florida State University requires all students with prior language experience (from high school or study abroad) to complete departmental placement for appropriate course assignment. French, German, and Spanish students continuing their language studies must take the placement exam before registering for departmental courses.
