The National Research Council ranks FSU's English Department as one of the nation's premier PhD-granting programs in English. Our globally renowned faculty, celebrated for their innovative research and publications, deliver diverse courses spanning literary disciplines, genres, and media formats. Students encounter thought-provoking inquiries that fuel academic discourse and creative expression, examining literature's societal and political influences. We collectively investigate literature's multifaceted histories, cultural contexts, and philosophical/geographical developments.
Our distinguished History of Text Technologies Program (HoTT) bridges traditional book history with digital humanities, revealing how textual evolution mirrors broader human cultural development - shaping thought processes, knowledge systems, and lived experiences. Beyond HoTT, we pioneer academic exploration through other prestigious initiatives. Faculty and students make groundbreaking contributions across historical periods, from medieval works to Renaissance theater to modern American poetry. Our rapidly expanding film and media studies program further demonstrates our commitment to academic innovation.
As Florida's sole representative, FSU has become a member of the Newberry Library's Center for Renaissance Studies Consortium in Chicago. This exclusive partnership enables our graduate students and faculty to access Newberry Renaissance Consortium Grants for research opportunities at both the Newberry and Folger Shakespeare Libraries.
The English Department provides a curriculum fundamental to contemporary liberal arts education. Among the College of Arts and Sciences' most popular majors, our undergraduate program offers concentrations in literature/media/culture, creative writing, or editing/writing/media. Specialized options include honors tracks, business-focused English studies, and Directed Independent Studies. Beyond fostering intellectual development, the English major equips students for professional careers in education, writing, law, business, religious organizations, and government service at all levels.
