The Classics Department is dedicated to enhancing our understanding and scholarly engagement with the ancient Mediterranean world through outstanding research and education. We cultivate an environment that supports both time-honored academic approaches to classical studies while embracing fresh methodologies and viewpoints. Recognizing the interdisciplinary essence of classics, we pursue a holistic comprehension of antiquity, encompassing its history, literature, art, and archaeology. Students are guided to examine classical works through the lens of traditional humanities as well as modern critiques of established cultural traditions. Our faculty excels in both instruction and scholarly pursuits, with many receiving prestigious University and national teaching honors. Department members have also secured numerous competitive research grants. The department has particular expertise in ancient literary analysis, Greek and Italian archaeology, Athenian and Roman political/social history, classical religions, and studies of gender and sexuality in antiquity. Faculty-led archaeological initiatives in Greece and Italy actively involve student participants.
