The Graduate Certificate in Afro-Latin American Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to examining the economic, social, cultural, and historical realities of African diaspora communities across Latin America. This includes both descendants of those forcibly brought during the Transatlantic slave trade and later migrant populations. The program enhances students' professional and academic profiles, preparing them for careers requiring expertise in international, transnational, and multicultural affairs.
With diverse research specializations among core and affiliated AADS faculty, students can select courses concentrating on Afro-Latin populations both within the region and in global diaspora communities where they've settled or where their home governments maintain economic interests.
The program highlights the rich cultural productions of Afro-Latin Americans across different nations, subregions, historical periods, and socioeconomic contexts. It provides integrated understanding of contemporary challenges facing Afrodescendant communities at local, national, and global levels, while exploring how these communities have crafted political and artistic responses to systemic racism and various forms of oppression.
