The Department of Modern Languages provides diverse options for graduate-level education. Our Ph.D. program in Hispanic Literature equips students to excel as scholars and educators, particularly within academic settings. Alongside two primary specialization areas (Peninsular Spanish Literature and Spanish American Literature), students can pursue minors in Peninsular Spanish Literature, Spanish American Literature, or Hispanic Linguistics.
The doctoral curriculum requires 75 semester hours of graduate coursework beyond undergraduate studies, comprising 57 credits of classes and 18 dissertation credits. Applicants with a Master's in Spanish or Hispanic Studies may qualify for admission, with potential credit transfers subject to evaluation by the Graduate Studies Committee. A maximum of 36 credits from completed graduate degrees may be applied toward the doctoral program.

Qualification Requirements

To be admitted to the doctoral program, a student must:
Hold a Bachelor's degree in Spanish from an accredited college or university. Special cases, such as holders of a degree in a related field, will be evaluated individually by the Department.
Have attained a minimum 3.0 GPA during the last two years of her/his undergraduate program as determined by the FIU Graduate Admissions Office. Applicants with Master's degrees are required to have a graduate GPA of 3.5.

The Spanish Graduate Committee will evaluate carefully all application materials and will make a decision based on the potential of the students to finish graduate work successfully. Special attention will be given to the quality of the writing sample.
The items listed below MUST be submitted to FIU Graduate Admissions office:
Recent GRE scores
Two letters of recommendation from former professors, employers, or other
A resume or CV
A statement of purpose in English, addressing the candidate's goals and objectives in pursuing a doctorate in Spanish. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 15 pages not including bibliography)

A 60-second video submission, in Spanish, where you introduce yourself and explain why you want to pursue a graduate degree. Creativity is welcome, but no more than 60 seconds!

International graduate student applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A total score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL or 6.5 overall on the IELTS is required.
