FIU's School of Accounting prepares students for exceptional careers in the modern accounting field. Our program delivers up-to-date expertise while focusing on essential skills for thriving in corporate, governmental, and public accounting roles, as well as preparing for graduate studies. The Bachelor of Accounting curriculum covers both technical accounting proficiency and vital professional skills, such as effective business communication in speaking and writing.
Aspiring public accountants must complete the CPA exam, with Florida requiring an additional 30 credit hours beyond the undergraduate accounting degree.
Following Florida Board of Governors requirements, state universities must create and evaluate Academic Learning Compacts yearly for all undergraduate programs. These compacts outline the expected competencies students should gain by completing their major's curriculum. Referred to as Student Learning Outcomes, these benchmarks represent the core abilities students must demonstrate and institutions must evaluate for each program.
The accounting profession encompasses diverse roles, including public accountants who handle various accounting, auditing, tax, and advisory services.
Public accountants often enhance their career prospects by obtaining CPA certification. Management accountants process and interpret financial data for internal organizational use, while government accountants specialize in public sector finances. Internal auditors examine company records to detect financial irregularities, prevent fraud, and improve efficiency. Forensic accountants apply investigative methods to uncover financial activities, frequently collaborating with legal authorities.
