The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides Master's, certificate, and doctoral programs in chemistry. Faculty research spans organic, medicinal, biological chemistry, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, and biomedical/materials sciences. Our researchers pioneer innovative diagnostics and treatments for conditions including cancer, infections, and neurodegenerative disorders. We embrace diversity in all forms - including race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and individual differences among our academic community. Graduate students are empowered to achieve excellence in their studies, deepen their scientific curiosity, and make meaningful contributions to both academia and society.
The Chemistry Ph.D. Program at Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science offers interdisciplinary doctoral studies across chemistry's major fields. Graduates establish successful careers as research professionals.
The program features intensive training with cross-disciplinary development opportunities. Students complete 80+ credit hours, including three foundational courses (9 credits total): Instrumentation 3, Synthesis and Characterization 3, and Kinetics and Energetics 3, along with a non-thesis seminar (1 credit) and Introduction to Chemical Research (1 credit). Electives (9 credits) can be chosen from graduate courses in Chemistry/Biochemistry or related science departments. The remaining credits (minimum 25) focus on dissertation research. While specializing in a sub-discipline, students gain perspective on how their work connects to broader scientific contexts. Each student's curriculum is customized to their research focus.
