The non-thesis alternative modifies the standard Master of Science program by substituting the six-credit thesis requirement with a research project plus two approved electives, along with comprehensive written and oral exit examinations conducted by the student's graduate committee. The substitute courses, chosen jointly by the student and their committee (with Graduate Coordinator approval), exclude thesis or supervised research credits, enabling students to concentrate on specialized areas crucial to their career growth. A single exception requires students to complete one supervised research credit during their final semester specifically for exit exam preparation. These comprehensive assessments allow the committee to evaluate the student's professional readiness and ensure uniform competency among graduates. With committee and coordinator approval, the exit exams may incorporate a multi-semester applied research project, providing non-thesis students with practical research experience.
