The Historical Studies in Theology and Religion (HS) program at Emory serves as a hub for exploring religion through historical lenses. Its goal is to cultivate students' critical understanding of diverse historical methodologies while building expertise in specific areas. The curriculum centers on three primary disciplines: Early and medieval Christianity, Early-modern and modern European intellectual history, American religious traditions, and Global Christianity.
Students concentrate on the field most relevant to their dissertation research, with faculty guiding them in designing tailored coursework and examinations for academic careers. While the program provides classes in these three core areas, students typically incorporate courses from other GDR programs and university departments. The curriculum also promotes foundational knowledge of non-Christian religious traditions (including Judaism, Islam, or Hinduism) to broaden scholarly perspectives.
