Emory's philosophy department has long excelled in studying philosophy's historical development. We view this as essential to philosophical investigation and as a distinct academic discipline, where professors examine both the historical progression of ideas and arguments, as well as the broader impact, evolution, and significance of major thinkers.
Current research focuses on numerous influential philosophers and movements, such as Aristotle, Emerson, existentialism, German Idealism and Romanticism, Hegel, Hobbes, James, Kant, Plato, pragmatism, Santayana, Sartre, Spinoza, Vico, and transcendentalism.
This scholarly work employs diverse approaches, including deconstruction, genealogy, hermeneutics, historicism, along with post-colonial and de-colonial theories.
