The History Department provides a carefully curated, medium-scale Ph.D. program that integrates specialized training across various regions and time periods with an emphasis on comparative, thematic, and interdisciplinary approaches. Our program delivers thorough preparation in both historical research and pedagogy within a collaborative academic environment—where students engage with distinguished scholars and benefit from peer learning. Doctoral candidates collaborate closely with faculty, utilizing our adaptable examination framework to define their research focus, merging specialized temporal and regional studies with broader cross-regional and theoretical interests that bridge history with other fields. The Department's academic scope is further enriched through partnerships, including shared faculty positions with Emory's African American Studies, African Studies, Art History, Candler School of Theology, Classics, Graduate Division of Religion, Institute of Liberal Arts (including American Studies), Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Law School, Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies, Tam Institute for Jewish Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies programs.
All post-secondary education will include a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, as well as post-baccalaureate degrees and other coursework not undertaken for a degree.
If you are an international applicant, you may need to submit TOEFL scores.
The Department of History 2020-21 PhD application deadline is: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2019.
