History majors must select a specialized focus area within the department. Given the vast scope of historical studies and students' diverse interests, concentrations can provide either comprehensive historical knowledge (General Studies in History) or specialized study in one of three regional or three thematic areas. The regional options include: United States, Europe, and Latin America with the Non-Western World. Thematic choices comprise: Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies; Statehood, Imperialism, and Civic Identity; along with Legal Systems, Economic Development, and Rights Advocacy.
General Studies - Requires five courses total, with one each in: Pre-1860 U.S. History, Post-1860 U.S. History, Pre-1750 European History, Post-1750 European History, and Latin American & Non-Western Historical Studies.
