A minimum of 36 credit hours in Classics, Greek, or Latin, or in approved related disciplines. The enduring legacy of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations continues to shape our modern perspectives, ethical frameworks, and intellectual inquiries. These foundational cultures form the bedrock of Western thought and remain central to a well-rounded liberal arts curriculum. Our Classics Department provides comprehensive study opportunities in ancient languages, literary works, cultural traditions, and their lasting impact. Introductory courses cover diverse subjects like mythological studies, ancient legal systems, religious practices, gender roles in antiquity, and translated literary masterpieces. Many of these courses have no prior requirements, with several satisfying Emory College's core curriculum. For language enthusiasts, we provide Greek and Latin instruction at all proficiency levels through both traditional classroom and personalized learning formats. The department features multiple major options, two minor tracks, and interdisciplinary combined majors. Those wishing to explore connections between Greco-Roman civilizations and other Mediterranean societies should consider the Ancient Mediterranean Studies program, where our department plays a key role.
