With nearly 160 years of excellence in music instruction, the Bachelor of Music Education program provides a strong foundation for aspiring music educators. This five-year degree, offering concentrations in either instrumental or vocal music education, prepares students for Michigan's K-12 music teaching certification. The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience through field-based learning opportunities. Benefiting from small class sizes and personalized attention from dedicated faculty, students receive individualized guidance throughout their studies. The program culminates in a full-time student teaching placement during the senior year, equipping graduates for certification exams and professional teaching. Upon completing the program and passing required Michigan teacher certification exams, students earn recommendation for the Michigan Department of Education's Secondary Standard Certificate with K-12 music endorsement, opening doors to teaching positions in both public and private schools. Eastern Michigan University alumni can be found making meaningful contributions across diverse educational settings - from Detroit's urban schools to suburban districts and rural communities throughout the state.
