The Bachelor of Arts in Art program enables students to investigate both Studio Art and Art History within a comprehensive liberal arts framework. Introductory courses provide fundamental skills in Art History and Studio techniques, while specialized electives offer deeper engagement across various artistic mediums. Students build a vocabulary of visual and verbal terms to produce, evaluate, and critique artistic works. As they advance in their focus area, they enhance their creative problem-solving and analytical reasoning skills. The department offers multiple merit scholarships in art along with studio and gallery work opportunities. Summer classes are available at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science, an interdisciplinary learning facility set in northern Michigan's natural landscape. With three on-campus galleries, students interact with diverse contemporary art and visiting artists who present their creative processes. Alumni gain skills for arts-oriented careers requiring innovative solutions. The Studio Art BA also provides a foundation for graduate studies in interdisciplinary fields like art therapy and arts marketing.
