The Department of Allied Health Sciences provides a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene, with new classes starting each fall. Students must complete the program by attending specified consecutive semesters. Graduates become eligible to take both the National Board Exam for Dental Hygiene and clinical board exams necessary for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist. As vital members of dental teams, hygienists focus on preventing and managing dental diseases across various work environments. Beyond private practices, employment opportunities include public health departments, hospitals, long-term care facilities, school districts, dental education programs, corporate settings, correctional institutions, specialized care centers, and health maintenance organizations. Tennessee-licensed dental hygienists perform essential duties such as teeth cleaning, fluoride treatments, sealant application, dietary guidance, dental X-rays, and patient education on oral hygiene maintenance.
