The Department of Literature and Language provides instruction in French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, aiming to equip students with practical language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking while fostering cultural awareness beyond their own backgrounds. Beyond personal enrichment and cultural understanding, language studies benefit scientific research, commerce, global trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations. Multiple Bachelor of Arts programs are offered in foreign languages. The classic major, focusing on French, German, or Spanish, delivers broad liberal arts education suitable for careers in libraries, museums, business sectors, and education. These programs specifically target professions where foreign language proficiency offers a competitive edge. Alongside the General Education Core Requirements, students must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences degree criteria detailed in previous sections of this document.
