Drexel's College of Engineering collaborated with the U.S. Institute of Peace's PeaceTech Lab to create an initiative focused on driving meaningful transformation. Bridging social justice and STEM disciplines, the Peace Engineering program prepares future engineers to comprehend conflict drivers, social equity issues, and their effects on industries, resources, and ecosystems. This curriculum offers an international perspective along with essential entrepreneurial, collaborative, and leadership skills for the peacebuilding sector. Participants can specialize in technical domains including systems evaluation, programming, data analytics, water and sanitation infrastructure, energy networks, among others. Both one-year and two-year master's degree options blend digital and in-person instruction with hands-on learning experiences, working alongside organizations like PeaceTech Lab and Drexel's Dornsife Center.
The Peace Engineering certificate program familiarizes students with this emerging discipline while cultivating systems-thinking competencies vital for professional practice. This credential was developed in response to demands from government and educational entities seeking specialized peace engineering training that doesn't require an engineering bachelor's degree or full-time Drexel enrollment.
As the country's pioneering academic program in this field, Peace Engineering focuses on mitigating violence through educational and research initiatives that merge cutting-edge technologies, methodologies, and policies with peacebuilding practices. Our goal is to train professionals who can effectively operate where engineering and conflict resolution intersect, making conflict awareness an engineering imperative and a fundamental design consideration.
