The Pathologists' Assistant (PathA) program at Drexel University College of Medicine provides both conventional and non-traditional students with specialized training in anatomic pathology, culminating in a Master of Science degree. This intensive two-year, full-time program commences each May. The initial year focuses on classroom instruction enhanced by hands-on lab experience, while the second year emphasizes clinical training through various hospital rotations. These rotations provide increasing responsibility in autopsy pathology, forensic pathology, pediatric pathology, and surgical pathology, complemented by monthly university-based seminars and assessments.
Upon completing the Master of Science in Pathologists' Assistant program, graduates will attain seven key competencies reflecting the expertise developed through the curriculum.
Develop proficiency in handling, documenting, and dissecting surgical tissue specimens, including proper accessioning, describing gross anatomical characteristics, preparing tissues for histological analysis, and photographing significant gross observations
Acquire skills in managing surgical pathology administrative tasks, including maintaining protocols, reports, and data, as well as ensuring accurate specimen coding and billing procedures
Master laboratory upkeep responsibilities, including equipment maintenance, supply management, and maintaining cleanliness in the surgical pathology area
Gain expertise in postmortem examination protocols, including verifying legal autopsy authorization, retrieving and reviewing patient medical records with pathologists, and coordinating special specimen collection requests
