Art History examines visual and material culture—including artworks, design pieces, forms of mass communication, and their surrounding environments—to uncover the meanings they convey. This discipline investigates the historical evolution of images and artifacts, their global circulation, and their interactions with aesthetic, social, political, economic, and religious contexts. By studying art and design history, students hone skills in visual analysis, crafting arguments, conducting scholarly research, communicating effectively, and acquiring historical insights. As an inherently cross-cultural and interdisciplinary field, art history offers profound insights into our diverse global societies, revealing the deep connections between art, design, and culture.
Those choosing Art History as their primary major pursue a BA, which includes two three-month co-op experiences, additional art history electives, and a robust selection of Arts and Humanities courses. This path equips students for careers in art history by fostering critical thinking, philosophical inquiry, anthropological perspectives, literary analysis, cultural studies, and foreign language proficiency.
