The History department focuses on applying historical perspectives to understand the world, our nation, communities, and individual identities. Through meticulous analysis of diverse evidence—including textual, oral, visual, and digital sources—we strive to offer meaningful interpretations of the past that resonate with contemporary needs, guided by modern historical methodologies. Our department excels in modern U.S. History, European History, and Global History, with particular attention to diverse historical viewpoints, cultural and intellectual developments, and historical writing.
Students actively engage in historical research using both traditional resources, like Drew's Special Collections and the esteemed Methodist Archives, and emerging digital humanities tools. The department fosters student involvement through the History Club, a Phi Alpha Theta honor society chapter, and research funding via the Leavell-Oberg Summer Fellowships. Additionally, we provide a combined BA/MA pathway with Drew's Master of Arts in History and Culture program.
History majors leverage their research skills in internships and professional roles. Drew's proximity to New York City and New Jersey's wealth of historical sites and museums creates abundant opportunities for hands-on experience. The History Major cultivates essential skills—such as research, information organization, critical analysis, effective communication, and adaptable problem-solving—preparing graduates for careers in education, business, law, government, diplomacy, media, museum work, archival science, and intelligence.
