French serves as a primary or secondary language in over forty nations and is used by 125 million individuals globally. Gaining fluency in French enhances students' ability to communicate in non-English speaking environments. Indeed, proficiency in this language has grown more essential for careers in international law, finance, trade, banking, and communications, as well as for advanced studies in humanities and social sciences.
Drew's French department aims to equip students with varying levels of French language skills. Our immersive language classes, taught exclusively in French, incorporate diverse multimedia resources to encourage active student engagement. For those unfamiliar with French but interested in its study, we provide several courses taught in English. Through coursework, extracurriculars, and study abroad programs, students not only improve their language skills but also connect French studies with their other academic pursuits. After completing our language sequence, students can enroll in courses offering global viewpoints and specialized training in literary/cultural studies or visual/performing arts, depending on their academic focus. The French program combines the examination of literature, cultures, and societies from modern France, Francophone Africa, and the Caribbean with cutting-edge teaching methods that leverage modern technology and multimedia. Our faculty consists of native speakers or educators with extensive experience living and studying in French-speaking regions.
