The Biology Department fosters a student-centered approach to education, emphasizing hands-on, investigative learning about life sciences. Through a challenging, comprehensive biology program and numerous research initiatives led by students, we encourage deep exploration of this vital field. Students cultivate analytical thinking skills, innovative problem-solving abilities, and effective communication techniques in both speech and writing. By studying how biological specialties interconnect and relate to other academic fields, students gain practical applications for their knowledge. We equip students with fundamental biological principles and practical skills, while offering dedicated guidance and individualized attention. Our science-intensive program within a liberal arts framework readies students for advanced studies, career success, and lifelong learning.
The program launches with three hands-on lab courses enabling students to investigate Ecology, evolutionary processes, biodiversity, Cellular Biology, and Molecular Biology. Alongside these foundational courses, students complete two semesters of general chemistry and one statistics course, ideally during their first year. Starting sophomore year, students can select from diverse course options tailored to their specific interests. Intermediate and advanced electives allow exploration of various biological disciplines such as Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Organismal Studies, and Ecological Systems. Supplementary coursework in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics is frequently recommended, particularly for those pursuing graduate or medical education.
