The Department of Teacher Education develops Urban Professional Multicultural Educators by combining academic coursework with hands-on field training. Our curriculum is tailored to equip aspiring educators with the necessary skills. The studies focus on achieving teaching excellence in modern diverse classrooms by exploring key educational topics, examining student learning and effective instructional methods, and incorporating technology in education. We encourage continuous self-assessment of teaching practices among our candidates. Through collaborations with Partnership Schools and other educational institutions, we promote active involvement in school communities. Graduates evaluate their growth by creating professional portfolios that reflect our core principles. These foundational values encompass advocating for social equity, employing transformative teaching approaches, and driving meaningful educational change while upholding Vincentian principles that respect individual worth.
Beyond meeting Illinois licensure standards, and in keeping with our mission to cultivate globally-minded educators, candidates will also fulfill requirements for an International Baccalaureate Teaching and Learning Certificate. The IB Certificate for the Middle Years and Diploma Programs equips educators with specialized knowledge for IB schools. This credential broadens career prospects for teacher candidates while deepening their understanding of inquiry-based learning and reflective teaching methodologies.
