The Department of Teacher Education develops Urban Professional Multicultural Educators by combining academic coursework with hands-on field experiences. Our curriculum is tailored to train aspiring educators, focusing on delivering high-quality instruction in diverse modern classrooms. The program explores key educational challenges, examines student learning processes and effective teaching methods, and incorporates educational technology. We encourage continuous self-assessment among teacher candidates during their studies. Through collaborations with Partnership Schools and other educational institutions, we provide real-world classroom exposure. Graduates evaluate their professional growth using portfolios aligned with our core principles, which emphasize social equity, transformative teaching approaches, and educational reform grounded in Vincentian values that respect individual worth.
Beyond meeting Illinois certification standards, our program cultivates global perspectives by requiring candidates to earn an International Baccalaureate Teaching and Learning Certificate. This IB credential for the Middle Years and Diploma Programs equips graduates to teach at IB schools worldwide. The IB certification broadens career prospects while deepening candidates' understanding of inquiry-based learning and reflective teaching practices.
