The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Chemistry equips students to teach chemistry from 5th to 12th grade across diverse educational environments, including urban and suburban public and private middle and high schools.
This program covers foundational education theories and practical teaching methods, incorporating hands-on field experiences that involve observing and assisting in classroom settings at various schools, culminating in student teaching. Early and consistent advising is recommended to help students plan and track their academic progress effectively.
The curriculum blends educational theory with real-world practice, allowing students to specialize in their chosen major while following a structured approach for middle and high school instruction. Fieldwork remains a central component throughout. Beyond meeting Illinois licensure standards, the program includes coursework for an International Baccalaureate Teaching and Learning Certificate, fostering a global perspective. This IB certification for both Middle Years and Diploma Programs enhances graduates' qualifications for teaching in IB schools while broadening their understanding of inquiry-based and reflective teaching methodologies.
