The Secondary Education Major for dual degree seekers enables students to pursue a primary major in Secondary Education alongside a complementary major in their chosen licensure field (such as Art, Design & Media, Biology, Chemistry, English, Environmental Science, History, Mathematics, or Physics). As dual majors, students must complete both programs and meet all state certification requirements to qualify for teaching licensure. This dual major structure equips aspiring Secondary Education teachers with both an education degree and specialized subject matter expertise. Similar to the standard Secondary Education major with embedded content courses (e.g., Secondary Education Biology, Secondary Education English), this dual major option leverages the knowledge of COE's Secondary Education Program and Educational Policy Studies faculty to engage students with critical educational concepts, teaching methodologies, and learning theories. The curriculum incorporates examinations of educational disparities, school governance dynamics, identity politics, equity in education, personal development within and outside academic environments, and the historical, cognitive, sociocultural, and political dimensions of human growth and society. These elements are combined with studies in subject-specific teaching strategies, progressive educational approaches, learning theories, instructional design, and professional development. Comprehensive understanding of these multifaceted topics forms the foundation of the program's structure and implementation, ensuring thorough teacher preparation.
