The Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies Program provides students with a BA major curriculum grounded in principles of strategic nonviolent action. It encourages critical examination of conflict and violence's root causes, encompassing direct, cultural, and systemic forms. The program explores social inequities and structural violence while teaching nonviolent methods for addressing disputes at personal, community, and global levels to foster societal well-being and reconciliation. It encourages open discussions comparing nonviolent and violent approaches to societal transformation. Unique to this program is its focus on conflict theory and grassroots nonviolent initiatives. Practical, hands-on learning is central throughout the curriculum, from introductory classes to capstone seminars, internships, and skill-building workshops.
Participants in Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies critically examine concepts of global and local justice, analyzing how perspectives on violence and social equity mirror cultural values, biases, and worldviews across societies. The program develops students' abilities to confront injustice and conflict through theoretical understanding, complex situational analysis, strategic planning for collective action and policy change, plus research methods and creative communication techniques.
