The DePaul School of Music Composition Department fosters creativity by urging students to write for diverse musical groups and formats while cultivating deep knowledge of modern techniques, styles, and artistic movements from recent decades. This educational approach permeates every program element: personalized composition instruction with DePaul's renowned faculty, classes in orchestration, musical analysis, counterpoint, electronic music, contemporary music studies, weekly studio sessions, and performance chances. The department cultivates a collaborative atmosphere that values peer partnerships.
DePaul composers enjoy numerous chances to collaborate with skilled musicians during the creation and rehearsal of new pieces. The School organizes multiple contemporary music events each term, including New Music DePaul, Composers Forum, and two performances by Ensemble 20+ - the university's unique student-run new music group under Michael Lewanski's direction. These regular concerts offer ongoing exposure to and participation in cutting-edge local, national, and global musical works.
