DePaul's German BA program provides students with comprehensive knowledge of German and Austrian language, literature, and culture while equipping them for success in our interconnected global society. As the most commonly spoken native language in the EU, German plays a vital role in contemporary international affairs, commerce, and the arts. The German-speaking realm encompasses diverse cultural traditions - from the legacies of Mozart, Goethe, Freud, Kafka, and Marx - while also addressing crucial issues of historical memory, racial identity, and their modern implications. Students are strongly encouraged to explore our study abroad opportunities, including semester-long academic programs in Vienna or an intensive human rights-focused program in Berlin and Vienna examining historical memory and contemporary refugee challenges. These affordable programs offer scholarship support through DePaul's Study Abroad Office and Modern Languages Department.
German program graduates have earned prestigious awards like Fulbright Scholarships and DAAD Fellowships, completed internships at cultural institutions including the Goethe Institut and German Consulate, and secured positions with German-American businesses throughout Chicago. Alumni have pursued advanced degrees in the U.S. and Europe, obtained diplomatic internships, worked for German corporations worldwide, and successfully applied their German studies across various professional fields.
