Geographers explore the spatial connections among individuals, locations, environments, and economies through advanced conceptual and technological methods. Rapid technological advancements, including mapping tools such as Google Earth, satellite imagery analysis, and GPS, render geography an engaging field of study. At DePaul, geographers emphasize practical teaching and research that significantly impacts the communities, settings, and systems under examination. They employ techniques like observation, visualization, analysis, and modeling to clarify the spatial arrangement of human and natural landscapes. Geographic insights cultivate versatile skills applicable to public policy, research, and commercial sectors. The Geography Department trains students in spatial reasoning by utilizing geographic methods and information technologies, such as GIS, enabling them to develop nuanced perspectives on global societies, environments, economies, and cultures.
Geospatial analysis and GIS represent a swiftly expanding, technologically varied, multi-billion dollar sector. The U.S. Bureau of Labor consistently recognizes geotechnology as a high-growth employment field, with projections indicating that demand for geospatial analysts will outpace supply in the coming decade. Geography offers a distinct advantage by bridging social, natural, and computer sciences, resulting in course offerings across all DePaul learning domains. This extensive curriculum positions geography as an excellent double major and a solid groundwork for careers focused on spatial organization and regional expertise. Studying geography fosters a unique spatial viewpoint at the crossroads of natural and social sciences, addressing both human and physical knowledge realms and their interactions across space.‚Äã
