The Department of African & Black Diaspora Studies seeks to offer DePaul students a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary curriculum exploring Africa and global Black communities, encompassing Black America, the Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Latin America. Through African and Black Diaspora Studies (ABD), students gain comparative analytical skills by examining regions, histories, cultures, religions, and philosophies using intersectional approaches to power, identity, gender, and race. The program enables students to acquire deep knowledge about the traditions, historical narratives, and social structures of African-descended populations. This academic foundation equips graduates for diverse professional paths, with ABD alumni establishing careers in law, counseling, social services, education, research, community activism, publishing, media, marketing, public administration, and other fields.
