The Dartmouth Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program prepares students for careers focused on significant research or leadership positions in health policy and clinical practice. Our PhD Program provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary training in research methods and teaching within the Institute's specialized fields. Each doctoral candidate collaborates closely with a faculty mentor and their research team to develop a personalized curriculum and engage in active research projects. The program employs an interdisciplinary framework that combines key theories, research methodologies, and findings from multiple disciplines. Faculty expertise spans clinical medicine, decision science, economics, epidemiology, health services research, geography, political science, psychology, public health, and sociology. PhD candidates develop deep expertise in their chosen specialization while cultivating broad knowledge across related fields. They receive training in both independent and collaborative research approaches to synthesize these diverse perspectives. Our PhD alumni advance these core disciplines, spearhead healthcare innovation, and educate future leaders in health policy and clinical practice. Doctoral graduates pursue careers in academia, government, and private sector roles involving health services research and policy development.
