The Department of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College offers graduate programs across diverse research areas such as Earth Surface and Environmental Processes, Climate and Cryospheric Sciences, and Earth and Planetary History. We welcome applications for both MSc and PhD programs. The MSc program prepares students for professional roles in Earth and Planetary Sciences or advanced academic pursuits. The PhD program cultivates specialized expertise through original research, equipping candidates with skills to conduct, analyze, and publish scholarly work. Our curriculum emphasizes comprehensive Earth Sciences knowledge, requiring applicants to possess solid foundations in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, along with analytical problem-solving abilities. Students needing additional preparation in these areas will complete supplementary coursework. Degree specifications appear in the ORC and are outlined here. Prospective students are encouraged to reach out to relevant faculty members to explore shared research interests.
We require our graduate students to obtain a broad background in Earth sciences. Successful applicants to the program have a strong general scientific background in basic physics, chemistry, and mathematics, and, ideally, a demonstrated aptitude for thinking analytically and solving quantitative problems.
