Dartmouth's Studio Art program provides students with an in-depth, focused journey into visual arts creation. The curriculum examines technical skills, perceptual development, and aesthetic considerations within both historical and modern frameworks. Courses are designed to immerse students in hands-on artistic practice through active work with various visual mediums. The Studio Art major requires completion of 10 courses, spanning disciplines like architecture, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. While Drawing I serves as a prerequisite for Painting I and advanced drawing/sculpture classes, no prior experience is needed for introductory courses in drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, or special topics. Photography students should bring their own SLR cameras due to limited departmental equipment availability. The program teaches traditional darkroom techniques for film development and printing, with advanced courses potentially exploring color film, digital photography, and large-format cameras. All photography levels incorporate historical study and contemporary discussions to help students situate their work within broader artistic conversations.
