Dartmouth's Sociology Department offers courses that teach a distinctive approach to questioning, problem-solving, and world interpretation. Sociology embodies analytical thinking within the liberal arts tradition. Beyond the standard major, we offer three sociology minors and a modified major tailored for students who want to explore sociology alongside another discipline or focus on interdisciplinary topics. Our curriculum addresses pressing social issues, as many policy challenges stem from societal factors. Sociology offers a structured yet flexible approach to analyzing these complex problems and their multiple viewpoints. Additionally, sociology helps students gain insights into their everyday experiences by examining not just personal relationships but also group dynamics, organizational behavior, institutional systems, industries, social movements, and national policies.
