Students achieve high-level proficiency in two Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Italian) by engaging with complex literary, historical, and analytical texts through reading, discussion, and writing. They identify key figures and intellectual discussions within the cultural contexts where these languages are spoken. Learners examine and contrast different forms of artistic expression and scholarly critique. They undertake independent research or critical examination of cultural works and sociocultural developments in both languages.
Those interested in declaring a Romance Studies Major must complete coursework in two of Dartmouth College's Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Italian), designating one as primary and the other as secondary. This program requires at least 10 courses beyond prerequisites, with six focused on the primary language and four on the secondary. When Spanish is the primary language, one English-language course may count toward requirements, provided it's offered by the Spanish and Portuguese Department after completing SPAN 20. Students will collaborate with their Major/Minor advisor to plan their academic path.
Students must have high school equivalent to USA. A strong GPA in high school is one indicator that you will continue to do well in college.
Most successful applicants score above 100 on the TOEFL exam or above 7 on IELTS.
