Dartmouth is renowned nationwide as an exceptional institution for language and literature studies. The French and Italian Department has consistently pioneered in introducing students to diverse cultures. Among U.S. undergraduate programs, we rank as one of the most substantial foreign literature departments relative to student body size. Our curriculum spans from introductory language classes to literary surveys and specialized advanced seminars, with options for both majors and minors. Each year, the department organizes around eight study-abroad terms across France and Italy - immersive programs that students frequently describe as transformative experiences during their time at Dartmouth. These well-structured programs complement on-campus coursework. The department focuses on two major Romance languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese). For majors, ten upper-level courses are required: six in the primary language (including French 10 and one course from French 22-25 for French primary, to be completed by junior year) and four in a secondary language.
Students must have high school equivalent to USA. A strong GPA in high school is one indicator that you will continue to do well in college.
Most successful applicants score above 100 on the TOEFL exam or above 7 on IELTS.
