The Middle Eastern Studies (MES) Program unites experts from diverse academic fields to explore and educate about the rich civilizations, communities, and traditions of the Middle East and North Africa. MES provides an extensive selection of English-taught courses covering the region's history, government, faith traditions, arts, and cultural practices, alongside cutting-edge instruction in Arabic and Hebrew languages. The program features specialized seminars working with original texts. Beyond on-campus learning, students can access numerous international study options. Close faculty-student connections formed through MES frequently continue after graduation. Given the Middle East's crucial influence on 21st-century global affairs, economics, and historical developments, graduates with deep regional knowledge are exceptionally well-prepared for careers in consulting, nonprofit work, international development, public service, healthcare, and legal fields. We strongly encourage prospective students to start Arabic or Hebrew language study in their first Dartmouth semester.
