The mathematics major caters to both students pursuing careers in mathematics or related disciplines and those who simply enjoy the subject and wish to delve deeper. The program offers considerable flexibility, allowing students to tailor their course selections based on personal interests. Mathematics majors can engage in activities that foster close faculty interaction, such as small seminars or faculty-guided independent research projects. Beyond standard courses, students with specialized interests not covered in current offerings often arrange independent study courses. Suggestions for independent academic pursuits should be submitted to the Departmental Advisor for Mathematics Majors.
Typically, the mathematics major mandates completion of eight mathematics or computer science courses beyond prerequisites. A minimum of six must be mathematics courses, with at least four taken at Dartmouth. Students must also satisfy the College's culminating experience requirement for the major (detailed below). Further honors program specifications are outlined in a dedicated section.
Students must have high school equivalent to USA. A strong GPA in high school is one indicator that you will continue to do well in college.
Most successful applicants score above 100 on the TOEFL exam or above 7 on IELTS.
