Students achieve high-level Spanish communication skills through engaging with complex literary, historical, and analytical texts in Spanish, including reading, discussing, and writing about them. Those pursuing the modified major complement this Spanish study with advanced coursework in another academic field. They become familiar with key figures and intellectual discussions in Hispanic cultural works. Learners examine and contrast different forms of artistic expression and scholarly writing. They undertake independent research or critical examination of Spanish-language creative works and sociocultural movements. The Hispanic Studies Major requires completion of at least 9 (nine) Spanish-taught courses numbered 20 or above. One upper-level English course from the Spanish and Portuguese Department may count toward this requirement. While Spanish Majors automatically qualify for this course credit, they must consult with the Major/Minor advisor to officially document it. Permission for this substitution is only given for courses taken after completing SPAN 20. For English courses outside the department, students must submit a written request to the Chair in the semester before taking the course, requiring departmental approval. This alternative isn't available for Spanish Minors, Romance Studies Majors, or Modified Majors. Declaration of major must occur by the conclusion of the student's fifth term.
Students must have high school equivalent to USA. A strong GPA in high school is one indicator that you will continue to do well in college.
Most successful applicants score above 100 on the TOEFL exam or above 7 on IELTS.
