Dartmouth's Economics Department offers courses that teach a distinctive approach to questioning and problem-solving. Studying economics cultivates analytical thinking skills in line with liberal arts traditions. Beyond the standard major, we provide an economics minor and modified major option for students interested in economics alongside another discipline, or for those wanting to explore interdisciplinary topics that intersect with economics. Our program emphasizes pressing social issues, as economic analysis offers a structured framework for evaluating policy challenges and understanding the compromises inherent in addressing societal problems. The Economics Major carries the STEM designation (CIP code 45.0603) from the National Center for Education Statistics, enabling international students to qualify for a 24-month STEM extension of their F-1 OPT visa status after the initial 12-month period.
