The Classical Languages and Literatures concentration blends modern literary analysis techniques with extensive study of ancient texts, available both in translation and their original forms. Learners can develop proficiency in Latin, Greek, or both languages. Beyond renowned works like the Iliad and Vergil's Aeneid, the curriculum includes lesser-known but fascinating choices, ranging from Aristophanes' political comedies to Petronius' satirical writings and Hrosvitha's medieval plays. Participants work directly with physical artifacts of ancient literature, such as medieval manuscripts housed in the Special Collections Library. This program can also be tailored by incorporating Philosophy, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, or related disciplines.
