Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) Program This two-year graduate program comprises sixteen courses, with students generally enrolling in four classes each semester across four terms. While the M.P.A. curriculum provides a foundational framework, students customize their academic journey by selecting courses aligned with their professional interests. The program permits enrollment in elective courses and research initiatives across various university departments. Students can specialize in one of eight focus areas: Environmental Policy, Economic and Financial Policy, Government and Political Studies, Human Rights and Social Justice, International Development, Public and Nonprofit Management, Technology and Infrastructure Policy, or Social Policy.
At Cornell's Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy, learners examine policy and management through an interdisciplinary lens. The curriculum explores the political mechanisms shaping policy formation, the economic rationale for government intervention in markets, and the historical evolution of public programs. Coursework covers public finance, regulatory systems, organizational behavior, and management strategies. Students develop analytical skills using both qualitative and quantitative methods while examining the ethical considerations inherent in policy decisions.
M.P.A. candidates complete summer internships in their chosen specialization between academic years. The program culminates with a significant writing project, which may take the form of a research thesis, internship-based professional report, or Capstone project.
Those specializing in Human Rights and Social Justice investigate contested rights issues in global and domestic contexts. The curriculum examines policies promoting equality and combating discrimination across various social dimensions. Students develop expertise in creating equitable legal and social frameworks while analyzing political and economic barriers to universal rights implementation. The program prepares graduates to advocate effectively against systemic inequalities.
