The program equips students for professional paths in academia, mainly within psychology, sociology, or human development, as well as for research roles in government agencies and diverse community or private sector initiatives. It does not train students to become clinical psychologists, school psychologists, or family counselors. Each student collaborates with their Special Committee—led by a Human Development faculty member but potentially including experts from other disciplines—to craft a personalized curriculum and research plan. Some may need to complete two semesters of advanced statistics coursework. All participants must build foundational knowledge in behavioral sciences and develop comprehensive expertise in human development within familial and societal contexts. The M.A. program mandates a research thesis.
The one-year M.A. in Human Development offers specializations in either Human Development & Family Studies or Developmental Psychology. This intensive master's program aims to enhance research skills and academic qualifications for students pursuing Ph.D. programs or other advanced degrees where human development knowledge proves valuable.
Most successful applicants have an undergraduate major in psychology or sociology, but students of high ability may be admitted regardless of undergraduate background.
