Information Science is an interdisciplinary initiative housed in the Faculty of Computing and Information Science, uniting professors, scholars, and learners passionate about exploring digital data. This field investigates information systems through social, cultural, economic, historical, legal, and political lenses. While computer science plays a key role, the program prioritizes system applications over underlying technologies. Information Systems incorporates elements from Computer Science and Operations Research, while Human-Computer Interaction blends Communication, Psychology, and Cognitive Studies. Social Studies of Computing integrates Science & Technology Studies, Law, and Economics, among other disciplines. New York State's Education Department has accredited the Ph.D. program.
The Information Science Ph.D. program concentrates on technological systems and their societal impact - examining how people interact with technology and its broader consequences. Digital innovations now permeate culture, economics, legal systems, governance, and research, fundamentally transforming work and lifestyles. The widespread adoption of these sophisticated information systems necessitates an academic approach that bridges disciplines, balances technical and social perspectives, and combines theory, research, design, and application. Cornell structures graduate studies into specialized fields, each overseen by a Director of Graduate Studies. Information Science as a field examines the development and societal implementation of information systems, focusing on how digital information is created, structured, managed, utilized, and evaluated. This academic discipline operates across both Cornell's Ithaca campus and Cornell Tech, with faculty and students collaborating at both locations.
