The English Language and Literature doctoral program provides two degree paths for applicants: the Ph.D. or the combined M.F.A./Ph.D. Each year, we accept approximately 12 new Ph.D. candidates, with one or two entering the joint degree track. Our intimate program size enables us to provide substantial financial assistance, with full details available on our departmental site. Despite our small cohort, we boast an extensive and varied graduate faculty with expertise spanning numerous literary, theoretical, and cultural disciplines. The curriculum offers significant flexibility in choosing courses, structuring examinations, and selecting minor concentrations beyond the department. Doctoral candidates engaged in cross-disciplinary work may incorporate faculty from affiliated fields like Comparative Literature, Romance Studies, German Studies, History, Classics, Women's Studies, Linguistics, Theatre and Performing Arts, Government, Philosophy, and Film and Media Studies onto their advisory committees.
Applicants must currently have, or expect to have, at least a BA or BS (or the equivalent) in any field before matriculation.
