Since the early 1990s, Cornell's Computer Science department has cultivated one of the world's premier AI research groups, evidenced by our numerous awards, media coverage, and other accolades. Despite our modest size, we foster a collaborative atmosphere where diverse research initiatives thrive.
The Computer Science Field caters to students focused on both theoretical and applied aspects of computational processes. Research areas span algorithms, computer architecture, AI, computer vision, computational biology, distributed systems, databases, machine learning, natural language processing, networking, numerical analysis, software development, programming languages, robotics, and computational theory. Cornell's Computer Science PhD program is regularly ranked among the nation's top six, featuring comprehensive research across all computing disciplines. Our program stands out for its exceptional faculty, history of groundbreaking research, and the extensive scope of doctoral studies. Both faculty and PhD candidates work across our Ithaca campus and Cornell Tech in New York City. The Computer Science Field additionally incorporates faculty from related departments (including Electrical Engineering, Information Science, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Biology, and Architecture) who may advise doctoral research in computer science topics.
