Cornell University's Ph.D. in Communication program helps students develop, evaluate, and enhance communication theories while mastering research techniques and gaining comprehensive knowledge of the field. Ranked as the nation's second-best communication doctoral program, this research-focused degree offers an intimate, high-caliber environment that nurtures academic pursuits while equipping students for careers beyond academia. Doctoral candidates concentrate on advancing communication theory through empirical social science research. Graduates emerge prepared to secure teaching and research positions at academic institutions, join consulting firms, or drive policy research in government and private sectors.
The Graduate Field of Communication upholds this tradition by actively fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse viewpoints and backgrounds, enabling our community to thrive. We're committed to creating an atmosphere that empowers all members, especially those from historically underrepresented groups. Admitted students receive comprehensive financial support covering full tuition, health insurance, and a substantial five-year stipend. While most students complete the program in five years, many finish in just four. This residential program doesn't offer online alternatives.
Our researchers explore policy and public engagement through dual lenses. First, they investigate the communicative aspects of policy creation and implementation. This includes examining how communities can involve members in developing relevant policies, the potential contributions of communication experts, the impact of strategic messaging on policy support, and how media framing affects public understanding of scientific, social, health, environmental, and technological issues.
